Lauren Thorson is an artist, designer, and researcher working at the intersection of graphic design, computational culture, and expanded drawing. Her ongoing investigation of the mechanical XY pen plotter explores the relationship between human intention, mechanical processes and computational systems. 

Lauren was partner of Studio-Set a collaboration with Jasio Stefanski from 2012–2022. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Graphic Design at Virginia Commonwealth University. She pursued her PhD from the University of Minnesota, where she was a Researcher at the Interactive Visualization Lab. She holds an MFA in Visual Studies from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, a BA in Communications Studies, and a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Iowa.
